Latest Update

I guess it's been a while since my last update. Oops.

The biggest news I guess is that an injury a few weeks ago continues to wreak some havoc with my training. On May 8th I suffered a pretty severe injury to my left shoulder. Long story, but I was walking the dogs. Squirrel. Pulling. Concrete. Muscles pulled, bones, nerves, who knows. I couldn't do much for 4 days, and then I had to slowly get back to things.

I haven't been able to work out completely as before yet, but I can bike some and use the elliptical. Only a couple days ago I added some 5 pound weighted overhead presses. I can't run yet since I can't swing the left arm. And swimming - can't circle the left shoulder for freestyle, but I am slowly working in breast stroke though at 1/2 speed.

Before the injury I was contemplating a short break from weight workouts, but not this long of a break!

Ouch!

Just like a surgeon wouldn't do something like this to his hands, I can't do this to my feet!

More Run

Ran today.

Good warm up. Good running. Good cool down.

2.5 miles. Nice!

I have to try a transition soon. Be it the first - swim to bike, or the second - bike to run.

Running #1

Went running. That's notable since it was the first time running for running's sake in like 20 years for me! It went OK I guess.

I walked 400 to warm up, then jogged a mile in 11:07. Walked another 400. Mile #2: jog the first 400, walked 2nd, jog 3rd, walked 200, and finished the last 200. 12:54. Walked 400 to cool down. 2.5 measured miles!

But times not important. Main thing was getting out and doing it.

Then went and swam 20 lengths.

So I have swam 62, 72, 82, 20. And put in 2.5 miles of running.

Swim Baseline?

Today I went to 24 Hour Fitness to get kind of a baseline in the pool.

I know swimming 1.2 miles in the open water is much different than swimming some distance in a pool at a club, but some conclusions can sort of be drawn by swimming in a pool.

A mix of free and breast strokes got me to 62 lengths! I didn't take any long breaks. I think I did stop at the turn walls maybe 5 or 6 times for a moment each time. Of course in the ocean there are not any walls to hang on to - you can't take a break or get the added benefit of pushes off of the walls at turns.

I know there is some pool work to be done. But the swim of 1.2 miles should be OK.

1st Post

This is my first post. And it's a biggie.

I am announcing my goal to participate in the 70.3 in Hawaii in 2013.

You might be thinking "big deal". But it is! I'm in good shape, yes, but I've never thought about doing something like this.

The event is composed of a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike ride, and a 13.1 mile run. Eons ago I swam half a mile. Years ago I rode a 100 mile bike ride. I've never ran more than 8 miles. And that was 20 years ago. In fact, I have not run a distance of any meaning in 20 years.

So I feel OK with the swim, OK too with the bike. But the run? Ugh!

With the move, the new business, and stuff, this won't be easy to prepare. But this will be a journey...
